Study Abroad
Sustainability and internationalization are two subjects many consider to be reframing how people view the world and operate within it. Both are aimed at increasing one's awareness of the interconnected nature of the world. We hope to provide resources for those students wanting to study abroad while integrating their interests in sustainability. Outlined below are a few programs specifically related to sustainability, but we have also provided information on finding a program.
We have also included links to several resources helpful to study abroad students.
Specific Programs
- Environmental Studies of Europe - The Environmental Studies of Europe summer program is designed to provide students with first-hand exposure to the environmental issues facing Europe, with a focus on the European Union community and the policies being implemented to address these issues. The program is held in Freiburg, Germany, arguably the "greenest" city in Europe. Consistent with this status, Freiburg offers excellent examples of sustainable living: (1) extensive, reliable, and inexpensive public transportation, (2) prevalent use of solar panels, (3) high-profile wind turbines, (4) comprehensive curb-side recycling, and (5) access to extensive open space. In this last regard, Freiburg serves as the western gateway to the Black Forest. Class field trips sample all of these amenities. In addition to classroom discussion and local field trips, students visit the European Parliament in order to appreciate better the formulation of environmental protection policies. Incorporates EVRN 550 and EVRN 420/720 (6).
- EVRN 200: Study Abroad Topics In:_____ (1-4) - This course is designed for the study of special topics in Environmental Studies. Coursework must be arranged through the Office of Study Abroad. May be repeated for credit if content varies.
KU offers study abroad programs in approximately 60 countries throughout the world. Students can study in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, or Europe. If you are considering studying abroad, students are encouraged to visit with a Peer Advisor in the Office of Study Abroad, and then to schedule a meeting with a study abroad advisor to identify the program that best fits your objectives. While some universities might not be advertised as a primary destination for an academic program, they still might offer courses within your area of interest.
