Sustainable Students

Student Involvement

The concept for the Center for Sustainability (CFS) is based in part on a student initiative aimed at increasing opportunities for students to get involved in the process of making KU an more enviornmentally responsible institution (see more in Appendix F of the 2005 Sustainability Task Force Report). CFS works to create such opportunities by fostering the development of student-based research, service learning courses, and environmental leadership positions within student orgainzations.

Research

Students can contribute to research that is directly related to the goals of CFS or participate in other opportunities that support the Center's mission. Through connections with campus faculty and staff, CFS can assist students by pairing them with faculty or other students involved with ongoing research. CFS also suports student initiatives and independent research projects.

Education

The Center for Sustainability works with faculty to incorporate sustainability into the classroom experience. One way we do this is by encouraging the development of service learning courses with a sustainability focus. For more information about service learning, visit www.servicelearning.ku.edu. Leadership

Student can represent their student organization or living group as Sustainability Ambassadors. The ambassador network is a key component to achieving a sustainable KU because it serves as a major pathway for generating new ideas, establishing partnerships, and sharing information about sustainable research and practices with the campus community. Ambassadors meet a minimum of twice yearly to discuss issues that are important to our campus and report back to the unit they represent. More specifically, ambassadors:
  • represent CFS and its activities to a designated group of peers
  • provide feedback to CFS from these groups
  • assist CFS in promoting any adopted programs
  • provides information and cooperation across designated groups

As a student ambassador, you will have the opportunity to:
  • network with other student leaders, as well as faculty and staff, from thoughout campus
  • shape the agenda of CFS and experience the development of projects from the "ground floor"
  • work on an extra-curricular area of interest
  • provide a meaningful service to the University
  • receive regular updates on CFS program activities and research opportunities

As an ambassador to the Center for sustainability, you will be expected to:
  • Commit to a two-year term of service
  • Attend 1-2 meetings per semester
  • Disseminate information about CFS activities to students peers in your organization or living group

If you are interested in serving as a sustainability ambassador, please contact the Center for Sustainability at sustainability@ku.edu.

Involvement

There are also a number of student organizations that address issues of sustainability. Whether approaching these issues from a broad perspective or focusing on buisness, engineering, or achitectural solutions, there is bound to be a student organization that fits with your specific interests. If you don't find one you are interested in on our list, check out the many opportunities listed on the Student Involvement & Leadership Center website.
