Student Environmental Advisory Board


Student Environmental Advisory Board (SEAB) acts on behalf of Student Senate to make recommendations and to provide assistance to the Environmental Stewardship Program by developing policies and formulating strategies to improve the campus environment and to initiate and/or enhance campus environmental programs. SEAB also works to raise awareness and seek student input on environmental issues and campus environmental programs.

Renewable Energy and Sustainability Fee

The Student Environmental Advisory Board asks for your help to use the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Fee by submitting requests for project funding. The Student Environmental Advisory Board's responsibilities are:
  1. To oversee the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Fee (currently 25 cents per student per semester)
  2. Request for proposals and decide collectively as a Board which projects fit the stated purpose of the Fee, and
  3. Distribute the funds generated from the Fee to the projects.

Purpose of the Fee
The accepted purpose of the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Fee is based on the following rules. These rules serve as a guideline during the application and are the rules that the Board will be basing their decision on:
  1. Funds are to be primarily used for capitol improvements that reduce campus dependency on non-renewable energy sources. Funds will most efficiently spent on new construction, but retrofits may be considered as well.
  2. Funds may also be used for educational initiatives or materials that reduce campus dependency on non-renewable energy sources and encourage sustainability.
  3. The Board shall seek matching funds from the University Administration for all capitol improvement projects.
  4. Funds shall not be used for any operating costs associated with capital improvements by the Board.
  5. Funds may be used to cover fees associated with gaining LEED certification for campus buildings.
  6. Excess funds shall be allowed to accrue to allow for larger capital improvements by subsequent Boards.

Eligibility
Any student, faculty, staff, class, or registered student organization. Members and local businesses of the Lawrence community, if working with a university affiliate, may apply as well. All projects must follow the previously listed rules. Application for Funds
Applications must be submitted by email to Robin Smith (rbs@ku.edu). If the proposal is approved for funding, the submitted application will be posted on the Center for Sustainability website.
